Ottawa, originally called Bytown, was chosen by Queen Victoria to be the new Capital as it was located far enough inland to be safe from possible American attack. The first Ontario capitals of Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto had both been burned down in 1813 during the War of 1812 so a move to a safer locale was felt very necessary.
Ottawa today is certainly comprised of the must see Parliament Buildings where you can view the Houses of Parliament, experience the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, see a real Mountie, and visit The Royal Mint. Admission to the Parliament Buildings including a 30 minute tour is complimentary to the public. This includes an elevator ride to the top of the Peace Tower, where you can experience breath taking views of the city.
However, it is also a city full of parks along both the Rideau Canal and Ottawa River; and a city full of museums including the acclaimed Museum of Civilization, the National War Museum and more. The city spills over into Hull Quebec, just across the Ottawa River, where you can experience both French and English, the founding cultures of Canada.
