Set in the fictional Town of Everington in the real mining County of Durham, England, this story centers on the life of Billy Elliot and his love of dance. During the UK miners. strike of 1984-1985, Billy's father and older brother find themselves out of work. With Billy's mother not being alive, his father had always been very busy supporting the family and couldn't spend much with the 11 year old. With the miners. strike, Mr. Elliot is finally able to spend time with his younger son and begins exposing Billy to his love of boxing. Billy doesn't share the same passion towards boxing as his father does and begins to take up ballet as part of the gym is used for dance. Aspiring to become a professional ballet dancer, Billy keeps it a secret from his father fearing his disapproval.
